An aMAZE-ing Autumn Date

It's time for another Foxfield Inn date night idea! This month, we've been thinking about ways to enjoy the cooler weather and celebrate the fall in true Virginia fashion. If you're looking to share a little adventure with your loved one, why not bring a little country charm into your next date by trying one of the Charlottesville area's fantastic corn mazes?

Another perk of corn mazes: impromptu
photo shoots celebrating fall romance.
At Adventure Farm in Earlysville, you can explore the corn maze, take a nostalgic hay ride, and even pick out a pumpkin to bring home with you. Open every Saturday (11-5) and Sunday (12-5) in October.

Liberty Mills Farm, just a short drive away near the city of Orange, boasts Virginia's largest corn maze (25 acres!) with an incredibly creative design each year. The $10 admission fee gives you unlimited access to the 3 mazes (complete with fun puzzles within each maze). The maze is open from 1-6pm Wednesday-Friday, 10-6 Saturday, and 11-5 Sunday through November 3. In addition, if you'd like a spookier setting, bring a flashlight and head out for the special flashlight maze on Saturdays from 6-10pm.

It may sound corny, but getting lost in a maze and finding your way out together stimulates good conversation and teamwork, and would be a great way to spend time with the special person in your life. Let us know how else we at Foxfield Inn can make your autumn stay enjoyable and adventurous.

Top Places Near Charlottesville to View Fall Color

It's the most colorful time of the year here at Foxfield Inn: fall color is peaking in Central Virginia, and that means it's time for leaf-peeping! We've rounded up some of the best spots to view fall color, so bring your cameras and come be immersed in the beauty of the Blue Ridge.

The Blue Ridge Mountains offer spectacular fall color.

For the wine-lover... If your idea of a perfect afternoon is sipping a glass of wine while breathing in clean air and taking in the beauty of the landscape, head to Veritas Vineyard & Winery or King Family Vineyards where you can sample local wines indoors or out on expansive patios and porches with breathtaking views.

Dan captured this shot at nearby Mint Springs Valley Park. King Family Vineyards is just down the road.

For the history buff... Want to experience Monticello as Thomas Jefferson would have seen it in the fall? Be sure to take in the varied color and shape of this garden afficionado's grounds, especially if you've visited previously during other seasons. As you head back down the mountain, be sure to stop off at the Monticello walking trail area for an easy-going stroll into the heart of a mature forest where falling leaves can be nothing short of magical.

For the outdoor enthusiast...If working up your heart-rate helps you appreciate your surroundings, how about opting for a canoe or kayak trip down the Shenandoah or James Rivers? Most companies recommend making reservations in advance. Check out James River Runners in nearby Scottsville or Shenandoah River Adventures just past Harrisonburg for more information, and be sure to bring your cameras to document a unique perspective.

If you're up for a drive... You simply can't beat the scenic views on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Linking Shenandoah National Park with the Great Smoky Mountain National park, the parkway extends through Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina with some of the most breathtaking overlooks that attract thousands of visitors each fall. You can get on the Parkway at the top of nearby Afton Mountain and head either north or south for as long as you'd like, stopping at scenic overlooks for a photo as you desire.

Or how about in our own backyard? It doesn't get much more relaxing than that. We can't wait for you to experience the beauty of autumn with us here at Foxfield Inn. Let us know how we can make your fall visit an unforgettable experience. Do you have additional suggestions for places to view the leaves? Leave a comment below with your ideas or share a photo on our Facebook page!

The ART of Date Night

Earlier this month Foxfield Inn shared some of the best places in Charlottesville to browse and purchase local art. We may have overlooked one truly entertaining option: make your own! We've scouted out some of the popular instructor-led classes, workshops, and studios nearby to help jazz up your next date night while creating a fabulous memento for your home.

Gone are the days of stiff still life painting classes. Fun Nite Art will have you on-your-feet excited about painting. Literally. At a recent class I attended, no one was allowed to paint until everyone had spent some time dancing in place at the beginning of class - sort of like the start of an Ellen Degeneres show. Our instructor, Tammy, had us laughing the entire time and set even the most art-phobic of us at ease. Each class has a model painting that all participants paint their own version of and are able to take home at the end of the night. At my class, it was truly empowering to see a series of carefully placed marks on my canvas suddenly transform into a cow.

Check the schedule of upcoming events online here, and when you find the painting you'd like to create, be sure to register for the event online to reserve your place. Remember to check out the "date night" events where each person creates a half of a painting which are then placed together to create a whole piece--a very special way to commemorate your relationship. Supplies and aprons are provided, and many events are held at restaurants where you can order snacks, drinks, even dinner. No wonder they call it a pARTy!

There must be something in the water here...pottery and ceramics have flourished in Charlottesville, and City Clay is the place to go to be a part of this thriving community. Check out the list of current classes here. Although they are not offering date night events this season, those are expected to return in early 2014. In the mean time, you could inquire about a team-building activity or private session for beginners.

Even if you decide not to take a class, be sure to check out City Clay's gallery, as well! You may even be able to meet the artists at opening receptions held the first Friday of each month. Further, City Clay is a part of the Artisan Studio Tour held November 9-10 of this year, where you can get an inside look at a pottery wheel demonstration.

Fusing. Slumping. Sandblasting. No, these are not things you got in trouble for in middle school, but rather part of the craft of creating with glass! From stained glass wall hangings to glass jewelry and even vases and dinnerware, The Glass Palette offers flexible walk-in hours during which you can create any piece you want, no experience necessary! Let the staff guide you through some examples and offer expert instruction in designing your unique piece, and then go to town! Celebrating an anniversary? Why not decorate your own pair of wine glasses to commemorate your big day?

It can be intimidating to sign up for any class if you consider yourself an art novice. But whether you're a beginner or quite advanced, spending time with your loved one to create a very personal piece of art is a great way to reconnect as you rediscover your own inner creativity. Let us know how else we at Foxfield Inn can help you explore the Charlottesville we know and love for your next date night. We can't wait to hear about the fabulous masterpieces you create!
